Sicily
Sicily is a different kind of Italy altogether. Where Tuscany is tranquil and refined, Sicily is energetic and ever so slightly chaotic. Where Tuscany is known for its rolling hills and renaissance architecture, Sicily is a treasure trove of the past marked by rocky shorelines and fine sandy beaches. What they have in common though is their wonderful cuisine and warm hospitality.
Tennis Location
TTH's chosen location on the island is Syracuse, a beautiful historic city located within easy reach of wonderful beaches. Syracuse is also well placed for visiting many of Sicily's famous towns and its most famous landmark, Mount Etna.
Ortygia
One of the main attractions in visiting this area is the island of Ortygia, which is connected to the mainland city of Syracuse by means of 3 bridges. The remains of the Temple of Apollo are sited in the Piazza Pancali; this is the oldest Greek temple in Sicily, built around 565 BC. The cathedral in the nearby Piazza Duomo is uniquely made up of the original walls of a 5th-century BC Greek temple known as the Athenaion and near the sea, along Via Capodieci, there is the mythical Spring of Arethusa. Apart from the many historic sights, the island of Ortygia also offers numerous boutiques and craft shops, as well as restaurants and cafes galore. Several hours are required to explore the island fully.
Tennis Centre
The tennis centre which is situated on the outskirts of Syracuse is one of the most impressive clubs in Sicily. Run by the same family for 30 years, it has a great location and excellent facilities, including 5 European red clay courts, 3 synthetic grass, 2 swimming pools, a small gym, a beauty/health centre and a clubhouse with bar.
The head coach is Nico di Simone who is the Italian Tennis Federation regional technical director. He organises all the club tennis programmes along with 8 other coaches.
If ever you feel like a break from tennis a walk of only 100 metres will take you to a remarkable archaeological site which hosts a Greek amphitheatre and other important Greek and Roman ruins.
