Syracuse is an excellent location for exploring the surrounding area, within an hour's drive you can visit the most active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, the beautiful baroque town of Noto with its spectacular buildings, even more impresive in the early evening light.
Ortygia is a great little town to wander around in, sampling the local cuisine, and in just over an hour by car the hillside town of Taormina is worth a visit, with a Greek theatre offering views towards Etna and the surrounding coast to name but a few.........
